Going Retro

So in the last few posts I’ve been trying to emphasize that the modern cinematic era of CGI, however cool, is not everything. Being a fan of in-camera effects, this next video burns the nostalgic part of me. It’s for the Arcade Fire song “Black Mirror”. The video pays homage to early surrealism in film. It draws many visual parallels to Robert Wiene’s dark and bizarro  ”Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920). Using a mix of old and new school techniques, the  directors of ”Black Mirror” clearly took the best of both worlds.  Directed by Olivier Groulx and Tracy Maurice of Montreal’s 1976 Productions.
