Beautiful 16, Liverpool 8

It’s time we take things back to the good ol’ days. Today I want to showcase a retro vfx music video. This one of my favorites. It’s no secret that nowadays motion graphic compositing is uber-popular in commercials and music videos. You see it every day in Top 40 videos.

The video I’m showing uses now nearly extinct lab methods to create analog motion graphic effects. This is a heavy post-production project with hand-drawn animation, mattes and super-imposed film. Some of the effects come off a little cheesy but you have to keep in mind when this was made.

The video is “You’re Sixteen” by Ringo Starr. The year was 1973! I believe it was directed by Michael Mileham.

Again, some of the effects may appear tacky now but it’s important to appreciate when this was created. Don’t make me list the countless videos this has influenced and inspired.

P.S. I also thought this would be a fitting time for a Ringo video since he just released a new album this month called “Liverpool 8″.

  1. This was probably the trip all the acid head Beatles fan were waiting for. I like how the art fades in sometimes, sort of like the all the wacky shit that pops up in “Yellow Submarine”.
